About the Artist

Paul Hanis Alaskan artist sculptor wood carver steel ice snow sculpture

I have been an active artist in Alaska for 23 years, having created dozens of sculptures all over the state and created many watercolors that have been shipped throughout the country. My focus is primarily on sculpture with an ever increasing list of wood carvings throughout the state and a hard-earned reputation as one of Alaska’s top snow sculptors with 8 First place awards to my name. I also work in steel and ice.

My artwork serves as homage to our amazing Mother Nature. I convey the life essence of natural forms and objects using a combination of abstraction, exaggeration, and the depiction of normally unseen forces such as the vibrancy in the air around a flower, the exuberance in a galaxy of frost crystals, and the slow movement of a rock formation. I express these experiences through watercolor paintings, ice and snow sculptures, wood and metalwork, and naturally-built structures. My art has been shaped and informed by living very close to the land in an off-the-grid lifestyle, where intimate and personal interactions with nature are integral to every aspect of my daily life.

After completing my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in the spring of 2001, I spent the summer backpacking 500 miles across Colorado’s Rocky Mountains and then in the fall permanently moved to Alaska so I could immerse myself in a truly vast wilderness. I have since settled into a remote part of the Wrangell -St. Elias mountains near McCarthy, where I have adventured extensively in the surrounding landscape. You can learn more about my life, experiences in the wilderness, and artistic development by visiting my blog. I look forward to sharing with you!
