Watercolor Paintings
My watercolor paintings embrace a semi-abstract style that blurs the boundary between recognizable objects and color fields and washes, combining a loose style with tightly defined lines. I am fascinated by the possibilities inherent in a medium that goes through changes of state and outcome depending on how saturated the paper is and how much ink is applied. My watercolors are a collaboration with the elements, relinquishing some control in places and steering the ink in others. It is a wonderful endeavor, exciting every time, because I never know what the finished product will look like when I begin.
Alaska Forget-Me-Not
11” x 15”
The Forget-Me-Not is the official Alaska state flower. These tiny blossoms can be found growing in low meadows as well as the high alpine areas throughout the state.
Hoarfrost #2
11” x 15”
I have always been fascinated with the patterns of frost crystals. This watercolor series explores those patterns as they spread across a windowpane. I adapted this painting into a 3D form for an ice sculpture that was awarded 1st place at a competition in Anchorage.
Alaska Fireweed
11“ x 15”
This iconic Alaska flower is one of my personal favorites in the summer. The fireweed stem has an especially expressive stance and an impressive life cycle, growing from a tiny sprout to a towering stalk over 6’ tall in only a few months.
Hoarfrost #1
11“ x 15”
The first in the Hoarfrost series that explored the many amazing patterns created by frost crystals.
Hoarfrost #4
11” x 15”
A slightly more representational work, this hoarfrost painting focused on the fine detail brush work involved in NOT painting the white areas to establish the crystal edges. These are some of my most enjoyable moments as a watercolor artist.
Crocus
5” x 7”
A classic representation of the Pasque Flower.

Driftwood Frame Nightshades

The Nightshade family of plants have particularly interesting flowers. This painting actually depicts the flower of a potato plant!
